  • What the difference between Sun Yi's Academy and other schools?
    The style we teach better prepares you to successfully defend your self in a threatening situation. If you are training for they Olympics, then this is not the best style to choose. If you are training for health, to learn self defense, or anything along those lines, then this is what you're looking for.
  • How often do I need to attend class?
    You can attend as many classes as you wants as long as you are eligible. If you want to progress, you should attend two class a week at a minimum.
  • How often can I test?
    Lower rank testing takes place roughly every 2 months. Black belt testings depend on your rank.
  • Is there a Trial Program for Traditional Taekwondo?
    Unfortunately, there is not. This is because the first 2-3 weeks consist of Orientation. Any trial program would be almost over by the time you get to a traditional class.
  • What makes the Hays school unique?
    We have been privileged to have trained with a lot of law enforcement over the years and have instructors who have had to put their skills to use in real life. We know what works and what doesn't.
  • What are the ages?
    Little Lions is for ages 4-9. Traditional Taekwondo is for ages 9 and up. The oldest student in Sun Yi's Academy is over 80... so you're not too old.
  • Do you do tournaments?
    As often as we can, yes. We're currently trying to host more Open Tournaments here in Hays as well.
  • Do you teach weapons?
    No. Any taekwondo school that claims to be "traditional" and teaches weapons is not a traditional school. Not that there's anything wrong with weapons training, it's just not the 'way of the fist and foot.'
  • I really want to do this, but I'm not sure I can afford it. Are there any other options?

  • Is there a signup fee?
    No.
  • Are there other costs?
    You'll need to purchase your uniform and eventually you'll have to become a member of the TTA to be eligible to test. It's $30 for a year-long membership and the uniform is also $30. They last quite some time though, so you shouldn't have to buy more than one.
  • How much does it cost?
    Most people sign up for the year, which is $80 a month.
  • What do I need to get started?
    You'll need a uniform and you'll need to get a student membership set up at the Academy. Sparring pads and all that comes later.
  • What does "taekwondo" mean?
    It translates to the "way of the fist and foot."
  • How long does it take to become a black belt?
    If you test every time and pass, you can get to 1st Dan black belt in about 2 years. However, it takes about 10 years to become a certified instructor and longer to achieve the rank of Master.
  • Is it anything like what I see in the movies?
    Not really... no.
  • Is it like what I see in the Olympics?
    No. There are 5 primary styles of taekwondo. Chung do kwan style taekwondo (what we teach) was made specifically for the battlefield. It was created during wartime and remains the style that is taught in the Korean military and police force today.
